Sweet Misery

Runtime: 53m 02s | Release date: 2004

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, an additive. And it's a chemical. It's not a natural product; it's a chemical. The molecule is made up of three components. Two are amino acids, the so-called building blocks of protein. One is called Phenylalanine, which is about 50% of the molecule and the other is Aspartic Acid, which is approximately 40%. And the other 10% is so-called Methyl Ester, which as soon as it’s swallowed becomes free methyl alcohol. Methanol. Wood alcohol - which is a poison. A real poison.

Aspartame is a toxic food that came into the world as an investment by Donald Rumsfeld while ignoring the deadly effects the tests showed. Sweet Misery shows how dangerous the artificial sweetener Aspartame is. From its history to its effects, this documentary is enough to shock anyone into really looking at the food labels next time they shop.

This video is interesting and worth watching, albeit a bit dated and gets slow towards the end. I am glad I saw this one but don't think I'll watch the sequel. I wonder if maybe this particular movie (and perhaps its sibling) could get a face lift via re-editing from the original footage to help with the pace and get around some of its (minor) technical limitations, such as matte lines/spill on the green screen material and occasional interlacing artifacts.

Does Stevia fall into the same group as these other artificial sweeteners? Is it just as dangerous?

Hi Patricia. We believe Stevia is one of the nature's best alternative sweeteners. You might want to check this article for more information http://www.hungryforchange.tv/article/natures-best-alternative-sweeteners. :)

These videos are filled with so much information I am enjoying them. I do feel overwhelmed with the information and see how are leaders failed us. I was dx with Lupus and have battled many obstacles with my disease. The health industry has no answers but drugs which I opt out and found acupuncture and changing my diet to some degree. I did not understand what I was doing was still not enough. The thought of the companies willing hurting us and then using animals and but them through so much pain and torture just makes me SICK...... If American people would see this documentary would they change.....? Everyone likes food , sweet drinks and some will even go as far as saying who cares we all are going to die one day.......
Thank you for bringing these videos to those who want to make a difference in the life we all have choices .......
It is very difficult to go into a grocery store and shop and so I have started shopping on the outside areas of the store and only going for toilet paper, soaps and etc. within the aisles . It is a lot to take in so thank you Food Matters you are doing a great job. I will continue to push forward and who knows maybe cure myself from Lupus with food :)

OK so let me get this straight. The company created a drug that would make everybody sick so that they could sell drugs to treat all the people that they got sick. Wow. Just, wow. The movie should end with what we can do because I'm feeling really hopeless right now!!!

Great documentary once again. These documentaries really need to be out on mainstream TV for the world to see and start reacting with their buying power. How can this be achieved?

When I worked as a massage therapist, I had a client who told me she had been diagnosed with Lupus. On one of her visits to her doctor, she met a traveling nurse helping out that day who told her to try eliminating all artificial sweeteners from her diet to see if it helps her. She did, and within one week, all of her symptoms went away. She did not have Lupus - she was having a reaction to aspartame.
