FMTV - Invisible Illness

Invisible Illness

Runtime: 55 29s | Release date: 2019

INVISIBLE ILLNESS tells the stories of people living with an 'invisible illness', whether it’s chronic pain, Crohn’s, Lyme, SIBO, PTSD, infertility, or any of the many other illnesses or conditions not visible or obvious on the outside. These stories need to be shared. Stories of hope and resilience, courage and perseverance, and above all, a sense of community and belonging that is sorely needed. Not only stories from those suffering, but from the people supporting and healing those who live with invisible illness.

These and other conditions and illnesses don't necessarily manifest themselves in such a way where you can easily see the pain a person is suffering. This often results in friends, family, and even the medical community doubting or even dismissing the individual. So not only is the illness 'invisible,' often the person suffering feels invisible and invalidated.

I spent so much of my life trying to hide my fibro. The coping mechanisms I created made me angry and bitter. As a single mom I did everything I could to hold on to my job and take care of my kids and keep everything hidden. Doctors didn't believe me and because of that I wasn't able to get help so I had to try and hide it and just keep going.

I kept looking for something to help and finally found a program that changed my life. Without that program I don't know where I would be now.

What really broke my heart was listening to the kids talk about their parents. These invisible diseases affect not just your life but all those around you.

I have been dealing with SIBO and other gut issues. Yes it can be lonely and isolating, especially when a (former) significant other tells you "You are a hypochondriac" many times. I have seen a change of reaction lately, after I started telling friends and family - when they asked what the symptoms were - that they wouldn't want to be on a train or bus with me, because they would have to get off. Not something we would normally talk about, but I have got a reaction!!

So good to see hear about these invisible illnesses. They need to be shared more often, more documentaries seen by more people so that the medical system takes heed and starts listening to their patients. I do hope more western practitioners begin to open their minds to the benefits of holistic practices.
