What causes mental illness? Do our thoughts, moods, and behaviours depend upon what we eat?

Psychiatrists Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond met in Saskatchewan in 1951. They set out to prove that the symptoms of schizophrenia could be controlled with healthy, unprocessed food and large doses of vitamins. Sixty years later, it looks like they may have been right.

Featuring:
Abram Hoffer
Margot Kidder
Humphry Osmond

Very grateful to Dr Hoffer as it was reading his work a year ago that led me to a holistic doctor who is treating her schizophrenia with vitamin therapy and of course the all important diet. Sugar is kryptonite to my daughter. She cannot have a trace of it even accidentally in a condiment or a full episode ensues. Apart from that all is calm and all is well.

Great documentary. It is a shame that these documentaries are almost US based - we are in Europe and although it is all fascinating, it is confusing to understand how much of this applies to our medical systems (for example). We know France uses more pesticides than any other EU country but there is a huge movement going over to organic (school canteens etc), a very medicalised country, but has homeopathic treatments in every pharmacie along side 'conventional' medications and excellent advice is given on the use of homeopathy.

It would be good to see some EU documentaries.

FMTV do you have an opinion on this?

Hi Sarah, we do have several European documentaries. Here are some that you might find interesting: https://www.fmtv.com/watch/toxic-chemicals-kids-in-danger, https://www.fmtv.com/watch/dive-, https://www.fmtv.com/watch/fluoride-a-friend-who-wants-to-harm-you and https://www.fmtv.com/watch/circle-of-poison. Also, rest assured that we will take your feedback into consideration and will look for more films based on European countries :) ~ Iris

Any advice for people like me who live abroad (Thailand in my case) and can't find an integrative psychiatric medical practitioner? I've looked into Skype sessions with a couple of them in the U.S. - but their fees are over $400/hr whether in-clinic or via Skype. And they can't perform the vitamin deficiency tests and IV vitamin therapy obviously, if I can't visit the clinic. Any ideas of ways to search that I may have missed?
